“I'm worried about my friend.”

”…I think he is using drugs
but I don’t want him to know I told
someone. I'm scared for him….”

”…she drinks way too much.  I don’t think she has any control….”

”Who can I tell without getting her in trouble?”

What is the Care Team?

Webb’s Care Team:

¨ Is a non-disciplinary faculty group designed to help and support students in stopping their substance use before it becomes a more serious health problem or a disciplinary issue.

¨ Is concerned with student alcohol and other drug use as a health issue.

¨ Receives concerns about students who may be using alcohol or other drugs. Any community member who makes a referral will do so in strict confidentiality.  No one except Care Team members will have knowledge about who made a referral.

¨ Meets with students for whom there is sufficient concern.  These confidential interventions include educational and professional resources.

Is composed of five faculty members:  Ralph Jones, Lea Anne Windham, A. J. Swafford,  Diane Watson and Mike Quinn.

How the Care Team works:
The Care Team seeks to prevent alcohol and other drug use.  Although confessions are not solicited, if a student admits to using alcohol or other drugs at any time during the process of interventions with the Care Team, the student will be referred to a counselor who will work with the student and contact his or her parents/guardian in order to develop a plan to help the student. Otherwise, the following process is followed.

Level One:

The Care Team members receive concerns about a student’s health and well being that may include possible substance use.

Level One Intervention:

· Care Team members have a conversation with the student.

· Concerns are shared and resources for support are discussed and encouraged.

Level Two:

The Care Team receives additional referrals on a student for whom the Care Team has already had an intervention.

Level Two Intervention:

· Care Team members hold a conversation with the student and his or her parent/guardian.

· Concerns are shared; resources for support are discussed and encouraged which may include professional evaluation and counseling.

Level Three:

Concern about substance use persists.

Level Three Intervention:

· Care Team members have a conversation with the student and parent/guardian.

· A professional evaluation will be required as specified by the Care Team.

· Recommendations generated from the evaluation must be followed.

Administrative Action: If the substance use persists or the evaluator’s recommendations are not followed, the intervention leaves the Care Team and the student is referred to the Health and Wellness Committee.

· This occurs if the student’s situation has gone beyond the Care Team’s capacity to provide support.

· Since the student’s situation has gone beyond the scope of the Care Team, the student is referred to a group of administrators and health professionals who will assess, based on the student’s particular circumstances, whether or not he or she should remain at Webb.

· At all times, evidence of the selling alcohol and other drugs will be referred by the Care Team to the Health and Wellness Committee.

Discipline System: In conjunction with this strictly confidential and non-disciplinary health system, the discipline system will continue to respond to students who are otherwise caught using alcohol or other drugs. The disciplinary responses will continue to be significant for using such substances, involving suspension and possible dismissal, along with counseling and random drug testing for students who remain at Webb.

It must be clearly understood that the Care Team otherwise operates in total confidentiality and independence of the administration and the disciplinary system.
